Both rifles are Investarm rifles, the flintlock is a Lyman Great Plains Rifle and the percussion is a Cabela's .58 caliber Hawken. I'm thinking about swapping out the percussion breech plug on one rifle for the flintlock breech plug on another. The flintlock is .50 caliber and the percussion is .58 caliber. Today the hook-breech is used mainly on halfstock rifles and shotguns so the barrels can be quickly removed. When you have a fullstock rifle there will be very few times when you want to remove the barrel.The rifled barrel will spin the shot. When the shot leaves the muzzle it will open the pattern at very close range. The shot will most likely be damaged to add to poor shooting. In other words, a tablespoon of stain to a tablespoon of alcohol. With this thinned stain, use a small, fine hair paint brush about 3/4" to 1" wide and paint the stain onto the wood. The guns had a 1:60" twist, with a shallow .003" to .005" depth, and were specifically built to take big powder charges.Turn it with an electric drill, and run the emery up and down the barrel a couple of hundred times; that should remove a lot of the pits unless they are very deep. Change the emery often to keep it sharp. Finish up with very fine emery to polish.
